★ The Sapugaskanda Rajamaha Viharaya

I got a chance to visit the Sapugaskanda Purana Raja Maha Vijaraya (‘Gale Pansala’) after long time. I used to go to Sunday school in here when I was a child.

The temple has great historical value. It is mentioned that this temple was built by King Walagamba. Recently Sapugaskanda Raja Maha Viharaya has made arrangements for devotees to worship the statues of 80 great disciples of the Buddha.

Location: Sapugaskanda
Route: Kiribathgoda Makola Road

★ The Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya

Date: 01/10/2011

The Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara or Kelaniya Temple is a Buddhist temple in Kelaniya. The temple is situated on the west bank of the river Kelani (Kalyana) about 10 km north east of Colombo. The visit of the Lord Buddha to this hallowed site is said to have taken place on a Vesak (May) full moon day eight years after His Enlightenment, at the invitation of the Naga tribal king, Maniakkhika. The jewelled throne the Buddha sat on during His preaching, His hair and some of His utensils is said to have been enshrined in the stupa by the Naga king. The temple has become famous because of the beautiful paintings and sculpture. It still retains some of the original paintings as well as the paintings by the artist called Solis Mendis.

★ Trip to Riverstone

Date: 26/08/2011 & 27/08/2011

This time I went on a trip with my work colleagues and with their families to the Riverstone.  We started our journey from head office in Colombo around 4.00AM and I was joined with them from Kiribathgoda town around 4.20 AM. On first day our plan is to visit Riverstone Gap and then checked in to our bungalow and get relaxed. Then on the second day visit Pitawala Pathana & mini worlds end and then go to Telgamu Oya. Our plan is to getting there from Colombo go to Kandy and then go to Matale in A9 route. From there, turn to Raththota road and come to Riverstone & to Pitawala Pathana via Raththota town. This road will lead to Illukumbura - Puwakpitiya.

Our Route: Colombo --> Kandy --> Mathale --> Raththota --> Illukkumbura, along the Pallegama Road

  • ·        Mathale to Riverstone : 26 Km (26th Km post)
  •      Entrance to Tower : 2 Km (Walking)
  •           Riverstone to Bungalow : 3 Km (29th Km post)
  • ·        Bungalow to Pitawala Pathana : 3 km down
  • ·        Pitawala Pathana to Mini Words End : 1 Km (Walking)
  • ·        Pitawala Pathana to Telgamu Oya  : 4 Km

The Riverstone Gap
Riverstone is a Gap situated at the edge of Knuckles Mountain Reservation. On the top of the mountain there is a Telecommunication Tower. There is a gap on the way to the tower, which is so windy. The area is covered by mist in most of the times. To getting there we have to walk 2 Km from the entrance to the tower because vehicles are not allowed in. Fortunately it was a clear sunny day and we were able to see the surrounding mountains of Knuckles.

The Sir John’s Bungalow
We were stayed at Sir Jon’s Bungalow which is further 3 Km down the road. (29th km post). The place was amazing and The Knuckles in our backyard! We saw lots of breathtaking views from there. We had a great time there.

The Pitawala Pathana & Mini World’s End
There is Pitawala Pathana which is just 3 Km down the road. In here we were able to see Yahangala rock (bed rock). The area is really eye catching and in about another kilometer's distance is the Pitawala Pathana Mini World's End. Further down via Illukumbura road there is a natural pool ‘Telgamu Oya’ where we had a refreshing bath.

After that we went back to the bungalow and checked out and return home via the same route. This was indeed one of the best travel experiences I have had for this year.

★ Trip to Bandarawela

Date : 06/08/2011 & 07/08/2011

We started the journey from Delgoda around 5.00AM and we used Kaduwela  – Rathnapura route and from Rathnapura we headed towards Haputale. While we were passing Belihuloya we decided to have our breakfast near beautiful scenery of mountains. After that we stopped at River Graden Hotel to drink some tea. That was a nice place and management of the hotel was allowed us to go down to see the Belihuloya River.

We arrived at Haputale around 11.30AM and our first destination was Lipton Seat. This marvelous viewing point is located 17 km away from Haputhale along Dambetenna Road. Due to the construction of road we have to walk 1.3 Km to the place.  It was a quite wonderful walk thorough the tea estate. At the time we arrived we could not see anything due to the low cloud and mist. But after sometimes we were able to see the view.

Lipton's Seat
This is one of the highest points of the tea estate which was commenced by Sir Thomas Lipton. From the top of the hill, the beautiful tea estate can be seen and very important as a view point. When there is a clear weather five districts near Badulla could be seen from here.

  • Central Province
  • Sabaragamuwa Province
  • Southern Province
  • Eastern Province
  • Uva Province

This marvelous viewing point is located 17 km away from Haputhale along Dambetenna Road.

We have arrived to the Bungalow in Bandarawela via Nayabedda. It's a nice place, more than we expected. ... We enjoyed the hospitality of the caretaker and get relaxed.

On the second day morning we went to see the Ravana Ella and also we saw Alla Gap.

Ravana Ella
Ravana waterfall is creation of a Kiridi oya , which is located in between the 12th and 13th mile post on Ella Wellawaya road

After that we went back to the bungalow and checked out and return home via the same route.
